What is a tap?

2024-11-07

Tap is a tool for processing internal threads, which can be divided into spiral groove tap, blade inclination angle tap, straight groove tap, and pipe thread tap according to shape. It can be divided into manual tap and machine tap according to usage environment, and can be divided into metric, American, and British thread taps according to specifications. Tap is the most mainstream machining tool used by manufacturing operators during tapping.

Taps are divided into straight groove taps, spiral groove taps, and pointed taps (tip taps) based on their shape. Straight groove tap is easy to process, with slightly lower accuracy and larger output. Generally used for thread machining on ordinary lathes, drilling machines, and tapping machines, with slow cutting speeds. Spiral groove taps are commonly used for drilling blind holes in CNC machining centers, with fast processing speed, high accuracy, good chip removal, and good alignment. The front of the screw tap has a chip groove for machining through holes. Most of the taps provided by tool factories are coated taps, which have significantly improved service life and cutting performance compared to uncoated taps. The tap with unequal diameter design has a reasonable distribution of cutting load and high processing quality, but the manufacturing cost is also high. Trapezoidal thread taps are often designed with unequal diameters.
